Do you know
a Marko Ramius
or the delicious late
Mrs Wilkommir?
These are the only two Lithuanians I had run across till lately.
The former was the legendary skipper of "Red October", Sean Connery, while the latter was my friend Marc's grandmother, both allegedly from Vilnius.
A few weeks ago, a Lithuanian family were guests at Christine's bergerie.
Marius, the father of the family, gave us a present: a bottle of "fruit wine" he made. As far as I could gather, the tradition of brewing wine with raspberries is very much alive in this Baltic folk, just like the Zenne Valley brewers make "lambiek met frambozen". The one made at Cantillon's, for instance, is outstanding.
We all know polar berries are popular in Scandinavia, and Vikings will go through great pains to collect the fruit, in spite of myriads of virulent mosquitoes swirling around. Raspberries are more ubiquitous - as any fox will tell you - and Lithuanian people literally let them simmer in red wine.
The one I tasted is really delicious. I tend to consider cherries and raspberries as my favorite varieties of fruit and this very beverage really explodes with raspberry aromas. Of course, it is still sweet and I have no clues as to the alcohol content. It is not relevant, anyway.
Thank you, Marius, for this original surprise.
Ačiū
